Frequently Asked Questions

How many attempts does JEE Main offer?+

JEE Main is typically conducted across two sessions a year, and your best score across attempts is considered.

What is the syllabus overlap with Class 12 boards?+

JEE Main draws heavily from the NCERT Class 11 and 12 syllabus in Physics, Chemistry, and Mathematics, with a greater emphasis on application-based problem solving.

Is there negative marking in JEE Main?+

Yes. Each correct answer typically earns +4 marks, while an incorrect answer to a multiple-choice question deducts 1 mark. Numerical-value questions usually carry no negative marking — always confirm the exact scheme in the current year's information bulletin.

How do I qualify for JEE Advanced?+

The top-ranking candidates from JEE Main (based on the cutoff set each year, historically around the top 2.5 lakh) become eligible to register for JEE Advanced, which is the gateway to the IITs.

Is Class 12 percentage required for JEE Main admission?+

For JEE Main itself, no minimum board percentage is required to sit the exam. However, most institutes — including NITs — require you to have passed Class 12 with the prescribed subject combination, and some counselling processes apply a minimum qualifying percentage or top-20-percentile criterion.

How is the JEE Main score normalized across multiple sessions?+

When JEE Main is held across sessions with different question papers, NTA applies a percentile-based normalization so scores remain comparable across shifts and sessions, rather than comparing raw marks directly.
