What is tested in the Situation Test?+
The Situation Test evaluates your ability to construct a 3D model or visual composition from everyday materials under time constraints.
Do I need formal art training for NIFT?+
No formal training is required, but consistent practice with sketching, color theory, and design fundamentals significantly improves your score.
What is the difference between GAT and CAT in NIFT?+
GAT (General Ability Test) covers quantitative ability, English comprehension, and general knowledge. CAT (Creative Ability Test) evaluates design sensibility, sketching, and creative problem-solving — both scores are combined for the final merit list.
Is CAT compulsory for every NIFT program?+
CAT is required for Bachelor of Design (B.Des) programs but is not part of the selection process for Bachelor of Fashion Technology (B.FTech), which relies on GAT alone.
Can a science or commerce student apply for NIFT?+
Yes — NIFT is open to students from any stream (Science, Commerce, or Arts) who have completed Class 12, as long as they meet the minimum qualifying marks specified in the notification.
How should I prepare my portfolio for NIFT?+
While NIFT itself doesn't require a submitted portfolio at the entrance stage, building one with sketches, mood boards, and small design projects helps you practice the visual thinking skills tested in CAT and the Situation Test.
